Winter Week

What a busy week we've had! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our literacy centers this week included reading group with Mrs. Silvey, RAZkids on iPads, writing about winter and completing a text to self connection with the story Sneezy the Snowman, playing games that taught us blends and digraphs, finding words with blends at Word Work center, and finding winter pictures and pictures with beginning digraphs around the classroom and writing the sounds we hear.

Our reading lessons this week taught us to listen to, wonder about, and discuss the story A Big Mooncake for Little Star to build comprehension. We also read a poem together and identified rhyming words. We reviewed the power words we learned so far and practiced reading and writing them. You can find the power words by clicking the tab at the top of the blog! Our vocabulary words this week were: nibble, twinkle, enormous, and tiptoe.

During Writing, we began talking about nonfiction stories and writing. We talked about the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We wrote a list of facts about our classroom and wrote pages for a class book about KS.

We continued working on reading, ordering, and writings numbers to 20 in Math. We put numbers in backwards order as well!

During Phonics, we worked on tapping sounds and changing out middle sounds to create new words. We added blends and digraphs and practiced reading and spelling. We also worked on altering sentences and rereading. In addition, we have been doing blending lines each day where we work on our fluency. I told your kiddos I would share them with you each week so they can WOW you.

In this week’s Second Steps lesson, we learned that kindness is a way to show people that they care and that doing kind acts can make both the giver and the receiver feel good. We shared personal examples and discussed how they felt when they gave or received kind acts. Help your child think of a kind act they can do for someone and support them in carrying it out. With your child, discuss how they think the receiver of the kind act felt. Ask your child how they felt doing a kind act for someone.

In Social Studies, we talked about our neighborhood, landmarks and other important places to visit in our neighborhood and we practiced giving and following directions using left, right, east, west, north and south. Ask your child to teach you the North, South, East, West game.
