Fairy Tales Week 1

We have had a fun week reading fairytales! Here are some of the important things we learned...

We visited fairytale centers this week.  We wrote and read silent e words, we practiced reading real and nonsense CVC and CCVC words, and we found and wrote fairytale pictures around the room. We worked on reading and writing sight words and words with blends. We read books assigned to us that focused on skills we are working on in our reading groups.

During Reading, we revisited the various big books we have read this year and talked about the ways that we have grown as readers. We reviewed the prefix "un" (not) to determine word meanings, antonyms, synonyms, and words with multiple meanings.  We learned the vocabulary words unselfish, selfish, scrumptious, and blue.

We continued working on writing narratives during our Writing time together. We made sure to add lots of details including who we are with in our story, where we are, and what happened.

In Math, we worked on reading, writing, and counting numbers to 100.  This week, we kept our focus on numbers to 50. Please continue practicing numbers to 100 with your child.

During Phonics, we continued to focus on silent e words and two and three phoneme blends.

Earth Day

This week, we celebrated Earth Day and learned how we can take care of the Earth.  Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our centers this week included playing various literacy games that targeted individual skills that we are working on in reading groups, writing about ways to take care of the Earth, reading and writing power words and words with blends/CCVCe words, reading books on RAZkids and answering comprehension questions, and so much more!

In Reading, we listened to and discussed a book about dolphins.  We wondered about dolphins and used text features to build knowledge and locate information in our book.  We looked at the glossary, index, table of contents, diagrams, and bold words. We reviewed the -ful (full of) suffix during vocabulary and learned the words pointy, diet, playful and active.

We wrapped up our opinion writing during Writing and are excited to revisit writing narratives for the remaining weeks of school!

We started a new Math unit and will be focusing on numbers to 100 for the last few weeks of Kindergarten. This week, we looked at numbers 21-50 and practiced reading, writing, and counting.

We continued talking about being mindful this week. Mindfulness resources can be found here: Mindfulness Resources

We loved reading together and independently during World Reading Day! We started reading Junie B Jones together (my favorite!) and will continue doing so over these last few weeks.

We FINALLY earned our first star for "Star behavior" during our counseling lesson. This week, Ms. Peterson taught us a lesson on Responsible Decision Making.
