Community Helpers Unit

We had another busy week in KS!  Here are some of the very important things we learned...

We started our unit on Community Helpers! We learned about the various important helpers in our community and what they do to help us.  Ask your child to teach you about a few of them!

Our centers this week included finding community helpers and writing their beginning sounds, writing power words on Magna Doodles, practicing beginning sounds, reading books assigned to us on RAZkids, matching community helper tools, and writing "I am" sentences.

During reading this week,  we reviewed the concept of rhyme and identified rhyming words in the book Hands Can. We continued to build our repertoire or high frequency words in preparation for small group reading.  This week, we reviewed the word "can". We identified the beginning sound in spoken words and sorted pictures by beginning sound.

During Phonics, we learned the letters and sounds for Cc, Pp, and Dd. We worked on the power words "see" and "are".  We also worked on beginning sounds and blending sounds to read words.

We took a few extra days to review up our Math unit on numbers to 10. We started talking about number pairs, which is a great introduction to addition! Our next unit will focus on measurement.

We continued our narrative unit during Writing.  We listened to and discussed the story The Red Dragon and generated a list of objects that are red. We contributed to a shared story about a color, drew and wrote about a color, and labeled objects in our drawings. We identified and discussed nouns and continued to explore spelling-sound relationships during Shared Writing. We also shared our writing with our partners.

During Science, we learned about plants and what they need to live and grow. We planted seeds and are learning how to take care of them. We will continue to talk about plants and animals more in the coming weeks.

This week's Second Steps lesson was an introduction to bullying. You can read about it below:
