David Shannon and Veterans Week

We have had a busy week! Here are some of the important things we learned...

Our thematic unit this week was an author study on David Shannon. We loved reading his books and completing activities during literacy centers.

Our literacy centers included the following:

Reading group with Mrs. Silvey
RAZkids on iPads
Theme center- We wrote words to describe David and stretched out the sounds.
ABC center- We practiced reading CVC words
Write the Room center- We found words around the room and clapped their syllables.
Games- we worked on filling in the missing sound in our CVC words

In Reading, we read the story Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats and worked on retelling to deepen our understanding, making text-to-self connections, talked about patterns in rhyming stories and practiced rhyming words, and looked at illustrations and talked about their importance. We also learned new vocabulary words: proud, determined, whirl, and scramble.

We learned letters  "q" and "x" during Phonics.  We continued to work on blending and segmenting sounds while writing CVC words and continued to work on clapping syllables in words.

In this week’s Second Steps lesson, we learned to use body language and context clues to figure out when someone feels sad. We practiced looking at the person’s face and body, as well as thinking about what’s going on in the situation. Encourage your child to notice when others around them feel sad. Have them practice using body language and context clues to figure out when family members, friends, or characters in books, movies, or on TV might be feeling sad.

During Writing, we wrote about things that we like to eat. We practiced stretching out words and writing each sound that we hear.  We added a few more words to our word/sound wall. You can find the power words that we are learning by clicking on the tab above.

We are learning about living and nonliving things in Science. We talked about how living things need food, water, and air and living things move and grow.

We learned about Veteran's Day and talked about it's importance with our fourth grade buddies. Thank you to all who have served! We also got to honor our veterans during our assembly on Friday.

Looking ahead...
