Healthy Me Unit

We have had a busy two weeks learning about how to take care of our teeth and bodies! Here are some of the important things we learned.

Our centers these past two weeks have included building and writing CVC words and words with blends, finding dental health pictures around the room and writing the sounds we hear, writing the steps to take care of our teeth and writing ways to be healthy, reading power words, discriminating between real and nonsense words, practicing tapping out words with blends and writing them, and recording blends.

In Writing, we worked with our new partners to hear, visualize, and act out poems. We explored interesting words in a poem as well as repetition and rhyme. Some of us even wrote our own poems this week! We worked really hard on visualizing and drew and wrote our visualizations/what we saw in our minds. Ask your child to tell you about what they visualized during Writing.

We are continuing to work on addition problems and writing number sentences in Math. We talked about how we put together numbers when adding. Please continue to work on adding numbers to 5 and 10 with your child.  Encourage your child to use their fingers or manipulatives to count on/add. Also, ask if they can share either of their little chants to help them remember their math facts.

In this week’s Second Steps lesson, we learned how to state a problem without blame or name calling. They practiced identifying problems in given scenarios, listened to me state the problem, and then repeated the statement. Children (and adults) may be tempted to blame others when they’re upset about something. Encourage your child to avoid blame by describing what happened without focusing on who is at fault.

Our Reading lessons have taught us more about listening to nonfiction books to build comprehension, how to wonder about a topic and ask questions, and discuss connections between two texts by comparing and contrasting to build on our ability to think critically about texts on the same topic. We also looked at poems that had the same topic (ducks) and made more connections.

We started a new Science unit titled "Make It Go".  In the coming weeks, we will learn about the role of an engineer, compare and contrast natural vs. manmade items, learn about a push and a pull, and build our own galimotos!
