Todd Parr Week 1

We began our author study about Todd Parr.  Todd’s books are silly yet teach kids many life skills such as ways to be kind, ways to show empathy, ways to be confident, and much more!   We engaged in various Todd Parr writing activities during centers.  We also explored various phonics and letter recognition and sound games and activities. More Todd Parr to follow next week...

In Writing, our focuses this week included looking and discussing good writing, drawing and writing about our families, and adding beginning sounds to our pictures and sentences. We worked with a partner to generate ideas and share our stories.

During Reading, we learned and practiced how to choral read with our class.  We learned that words are groups of letters separated by spaces. We counted words in a line,  matched our pointing to one spoken word and even found our new power words like "and" and "the" while we read "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" together during Shared Reading.  We also read "I'm a Little Teapot" and found the power word "is."

Our Phonics lessons this week focused on owning letters (this week we did letters “i” and “u”)  and teaching them to others. We also used names to build new words by rhyming. When we know words by heart, we can use parts of those words to make new words by changing the first sound to a different sound. Please continue to work on these IMPORTANT skills at home with your child. The ability to hear rhymes is an essential skill for learning to read because it means that your child can discern differences and similarities in how words sound. Rhyming is a skill that will serve your child well when he/she learns to connect sounds with letters (phonics) in Kindergarten and 1st grade.

In Interactive Writing, we worked on writing the power word "the".  This is a word that we need to know by heart (it’s not a word that we can look at and sound out).

We started our second chapter in Math Workshop and are continuing our work on numbers to ten. We explored various Guided Math centers.

In this week’s Second Step lesson, we learned that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. We practiced encouraging each other (and ourselves) while the we learned and practiced a skill together: snapping our fingers. Remind your child that everyone makes mistakes and that mistakes help us learn. Point out when you make mistakes or tell them a story about a time you learned something from making a mistake. Next week we will be introduced to "Focus Ninja!"

Our Social Studies lessons this week continued talking about rules and responsibilities. We also discussed the word citizen and respect. Ask them how they can be a good classroom citizen.

We had our first Yoga lesson with Mrs. Travers, our district Educational Support Counselor.
